SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics. We bring together engineers, scientists, students, and industry leaders, strengthening the global optics and photonics community through conferences, publications, and professional development. Inspired by the transformative power of photonics to enhance life around the globe, over the past five years SPIE has contributed more than $24 million to the international optics community.

"The idea is that over the next 10 to 20 years, we develop a more vibrant economic marketplace for the next generation of technologies that will serve our defense and security purposes. And more importantly…. We are posturing this whole thing in a refreshed narrative of what security and defense should be all about.” - #NATODIANA Managing Director Deeph Chana PhD. "Our fields are eternally evolving, and that means there’s never a dull moment!" Today's #WiOWednesday feature Elizabeth Illy shows us a new side to the photonics and optics industry: marketing and sales! 💼 Elizabeth's journey into the world of science was sparked by her uncle, a laser physicist, and her innate strengths in math and physics. Ultimately pursuing a PhD in Laser Physics at Macquarie University, she remained open to all opportunities and career paths throughout her academic voyage. Currently the head of marketing at HÜBNER Photonics in Sweden, Elizabeth uses her experience with #lasers to shape the brand and drive sales. Her advice to future generations? Embrace the exciting and rewarding journey in #photonics! Read more in the 2024 #SPIE #WomenInOptics notebook: https://lnkd.in/gqabV3ic
☀️ National Harbor, Maryland has been a delightfully sunny backdrop for #SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing 2024. Attendees have enjoyed networking, learning from colleagues and experts, and exploring the latest sensing solutions at the Expo. Discussions on workforce development strategies and the far-reaching impact of microelectronics have sparked plenty of interest. And we’re not done yet! 📸 Enjoy these highlights from #SPIEDCS — comment and let us know what you’re enjoying at the conference this week. Thanks for being here!
From directed energy to near-space communications, the Tuesday industry program at #SPIEDCS covered a lot of ground. 🚀 The first keynote of the day was presented by the director of the Joint Directed Energy Transition Office (JDETO), Mark Spencer. He showcased how JDETO maps to the larger DoD #DirectedEnergy roadmap. Next up, we heard about the startup funding opportunities within the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships from Mara Schindelholz, SBIR/STTR Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Jenifer Shafer, Associate Director of Technology and Program Director at ARPA-E, discussed the "mountain of opportunity" for innovative sensing and imaging technologies at ARPA-E. Wrapping up the industry keynotes was the Industry Engagement Lead within the Commercialization, Innovation, and Synergies Office at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Alexandra Hale. She shared paths of engagement with #NASA for the commercial community. Thank you to all the phenomenal speakers today. We look forward to tomorrow's industry panels!
We wrapped up Tuesday at #SPIEDCS with a standout poster session! Meet six impressive researchers and learn about their presentations: Nusrat Sarwahrdy, an undergraduate student studying physics at the University of Maryland, explores the luminosity of #scintillators to enhance the power output of Alpha-Photovoltaic (APV) devices. Her work helps to pave the way for more efficient APV devices. Jaired Collins, PhD student at the University of Missouri-Columbia, tackles the challenge of shadow detection in aerial images using synthetically generated scenes. Using #DeepLearning and Unreal Engine, his research aims to improve the performance of shadow detection networks in mid-altitude wide area motion imagery in an array of weather and lighting conditions. Three undergraduate researchers from Towson University — Alondra Rodriguez, Dawn Johnson, and Lance Richards — highlight the threat of cyber attacks in the automotive space. In their work, they provide an overview of the current defense techniques and propose that an AI/ML-based #cybersecurity system could help identify vulnerabilities and protect drivers in high-risk situations. Casey Coenen, undergraduate biomedical engineering researcher at the University of North Dakota, introduces a deep-learning method to evaluate burn severity from human skin images. This highly-accurate rapid #diagnostic tool could offer doctors a quick second opinion in the clinic and enhance patient care in low-resource settings. Thank you to all the presenters tonight! 👏
